About

The Finnish gallery of unknown artists expands its activities. The first step are the Nordic Countries in the autumn of 2015.

Unknown Cargo, the art gallery, which reveals its artists only after the exhibition, has been received with much enthusiasm in Finland. Now Unknown Cargo is ready to expand its activities to other Nordic Countries. Next autumn both Copenhagen and Stockholm will see the openings of Unknown Cargo -galleries, both of which will feature local and Finnish artists in solo exhibitions.

“Our concept has gained interest both in the more traditional gallery circuit, as well as by the general public. For us the democratization of the art world is an important element about Unknown Cargo. We wish to welcome as many viewers as possible to experience art”, says Laura Porola. She runs Unknown Cargo together with Sanna Lipponen and Timo Wright.

“Even though Unknown Cargo is a non-profit gallery, we feel that the artists deserve their wages. For this reason we never ask the artists for rent for the exhibition space, on the contrary, we support them by paying a fee for the exhibition and we participate in other expenses as well”, says Sanna Lipponen.

The first Unknown Cargo was opened in the summer of 2011 in the Kalasatama –distcrict of Helsinki, in an old cargo container, and subsequently the gallery has exhibited in numerous spaces around Helsinki. Featured artists so far have been Teemu Mäki, Päivi Hirsiaho, Jonatan Varon, Heta Kuchka, Ananya Tanttu, Stefan Bremer, Ninni Luhtasaari and Jarno Vesala, amongst others.

The vernissage for the Stockholm Unknown Cargo will be held on the 20th of August, and the first closing party on the 4th of September. The Copenhagen Unknown Cargo will open on the 3rd of September.

Unknown Cargo is an art gallery of the unknown.

The gallery reveals the artists only at the end of each exhibition. Some of the artists are recognized and acclaimed, others are still unknown to the greater public. Unknown Cargo takes contemporary art out of the regular art galleries. It gives the visitor the opportunity to experience art without context or reference, as a pure and raw encounter.
